What is a DP FMEA and why is it required?
A DP Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) systematically identifies single-point failures in power generation, distribution, control, and propulsion that could cause a loss of position or heading. IMO MSC.1/Circ.1580 and IMCA M 103 require FMEAs for DP Class 2 and Class 3 vessels to verify that no single failure exceeds the Worst Case Failure Design Intent (WCFDI).
How often must a DP system undergo auditing and proving trials?
Annual DP Trials are conducted every 12 months (IMCA M 190) to verify system functionality. A full DP FMEA Proving Trial or re-assessment is required every 5 years, or immediately following major control system upgrades, power plant modifications, or vessel reconfigurations.
What does an IMCA eCMID inspection cover?
The Common Marine Inspection Document (IMCA M 149) evaluates vessel safety management systems, bridge and DP equipment, engine room condition, life-saving appliances, and crew qualifications. Inspections are logged digitally via the IMCA eCMID database to provide standardized readiness reports for charterers.
What is the operational difference between CAMO, TAM, and ASOG?
Per IMCA M 220, CAMO (Critical Activity Mode of Operation) defines the ultimate redundant configuration required during high-risk tasks. TAM (Task Appropriate Mode) allows a risk-assessed, modified configuration for lower-risk operations. ASOG (Activity Specific Operating Guidelines) sets real-time operational thresholds (Green/Yellow/Red status) based on environmental limits and equipment status.
